Coach - Kathy Fleming

Kathy Fleming began running track and field in high school and eventually became the 1500m national champion (1985) and a 5-time New York State champion in the 1500m and 3000m events. She was a nine time NCAA All-American in the 1500m, 3000m and captained the 1989 NCAA National Championship team while attending Villanova. She also was a member of the World Record Distance Medley Relay team.

After Villanova, Kathy went on to compete professionally for 10 years (1990-2000). She was consistently ranked in the top ten in the US in the 1500m and 3000m events. She competed in the Olympic trials in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000. In 1996 she finished 5th in the 1500m. She was a member of the bronze medal winning US team in the 1998 World Championships.

While still competing, Kathy began coaching at Boston College (1994-2003), where she coached several All Americans and an NCAA Champion. Her teams also won Big East Cross Country Championships and had a best finish of fourth at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. After two of her children were born she took a brief break from coaching and then returned to coaching as the Wellesley College Assistant Cross Country Coach (2004-2006).

Five years after her third child was born, Kathy returned to coaching recreation running classes for children and adults through community centers in the Wellesley and Natick areas. Kathy continues to run recreationally in local road races and has completed two Boston Marathons (2011, 2012).

Kathy joins the Suburban Striders with a wealth of experience as a runner and coach but also as a mother who juggles her family, exercise and all those other balls typical mothers have up in the air at any given time.
